Antioxidant and what you should know about it

Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals. This helps balance the cellular environment and reduce the risk of health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Antioxidans und was Sie darüber wissen sollten

1. What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that fight free radicals in the body. Free radicals are compounds that, when present in excess levels in the body, can cause many human diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

The body can make its own antioxidants to control free radicals. In addition, antioxidants can be obtained from foods such as fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. Certain vitamins such as E and C have good antioxidant properties.

2. Side Effects of Free Radicals

The presence of free radicals is normal in the human body. Free radicals also serve many important functions in human health. For example, free radicals help our immune cells fight infection. Therefore, the body must always maintain a certain balance between free radicals and antioxidants. Oxidative imbalances occur when levels of free radicals are uncontrollably higher than the antioxidants in our bodies.

Oxidative imbalances are often triggered by a range of lifestyle, stress and environmental factors, including:

  • Air pollution
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Alcohol consumption
  • High blood sugar
  • Foods with polyunsaturated fatty acids
  • Radiation, including excessive sunbathing
  • Bacterial, fungal or viral infections
  • Too much iron, magnesium, copper or zinc
  • Too much or too little oxygen in the body
  • Intense and prolonged physical activity that causes tissue damage
  • Excess intake of antioxidants such as vitamins C and E
  • Lack of antioxidants

Prolonged oxidative stress can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

3. Great food sources for antioxidant supply

The best sources of antioxidants are plant foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Colorful foods often contain the most antioxidants. Foods that are particularly rich in antioxidants are often referred to as "superfoods".

To get some specific antioxidants, try adding the following to your diet:

  • Vitamin A: Dairy products, eggs and liver
  • Vitamin C: Most fruits and vegetables, especially berries, oranges, and peppers
  • Vitamin E: Nuts, sunflower seeds and other vegetable oils and green leafy vegetables
  • Beta-carotene: Colorful fruits and vegetables like carrots, peas, spinach and mango
  • Lycopene: Pink and red fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes and watermelon
  • Lutein: Green vegetables, corn, papaya and oranges
  • Selenium: Rice, corn, wheat and other whole grains, as well as nuts, eggs, cheese and legumes

Remember, when it comes to adding antioxidants to your diet, no one food or food group is the focus. Instead, make sure you include a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains in your daily diet.

4. Pay attention to the amount of antioxidants your body needs

There is a lot of hype around antioxidants in mass marketing. We cannot deny the good health effects it brings to the human body. Antioxidant supplements are necessary, but the principle also applies here - less is more. In fact, consuming too many antioxidants can cause unwanted reactions in the body.

It is best to have a diet rich in vegetables and fruits along with other healthy habits. However, if you are deficient in certain nutrients or are unable to eat a healthy diet, you can take additional supplements, such as a multivitamin, as directed by your doctor.
