Professor Dr. Günter Blobel, a German-born American biology professor, discovered that newly formed protein molecules have internal signals that determine the exact location at which they are released into cells for energy production. He later discovered that some of the signals are determined by amino acid sequences. His findings represent a milestone in cell biology.

Dr. Blobel received a Nobel Prize in Physiology for his discovery of protein signals. At the award ceremony, the Nobel Committee, Dr. Blobel's biggest breakthrough was to discover the transport mechanism by which newly formed proteins are guided to the correct cell site.
